President's Point of View: Unveiling the mystery of impact

March 25, 2007

For the past six years, a dynamic team of key staff at the Foundation have been testing, retesting and testing again a way to measure the impact of our grants. I don’t mean just outcome evaluation but the kind of stuff that looks at the impact of the grants and moving up the barometer to the community level. We have applied for a patent on the process - so we are officially in the patent pending stage.

The Community Research Institute at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University has played an integral role in the development of this process. We are forever joined at the hip.

In the coming months more will be discussed about this innovation - but given all that has been written about the need for impact measurement - from the Gates Foundation to other major international foundations - we humbly wanted to just state - more on the way!
