Building Community Philanthropy!
Since 1922, Grand Rapids Community Foundation, Michigan's oldest community foundation, has worked diligently to build, lead and strengthen Kent County. After 86 years, the Community Foundation has grown…
- from a $25 permanent community endowment to one that’s now over $239 million.
- from one volunteer to 23 full-time staff working to preserve the endowment and award grants to local nonprofits.
- from grant awards that totaled $55,600 in 1929 to grant awards that totaled $9.1 million last year.
And to accomodate this growth, the Community Foundation has scrambled for space in its current rental location.
However, this all about to change. In November, Grand Rapids Community Foundation dedicated its new home, formerly called the Icehouse, at 185 Oakes Street SW. See photos from the dedication event below.

The Benefits of Home Ownership
In addition to making space for future growth, for the Community Foundation a new home will:
- Increase its visibility
- Add to the vibrancy of south downtown
- Save money by owning over renting
- Create a place for community convening
- Further diversify our investment portfolio with the addition of real estate
