Community Foundations Respond to Virginia Tech Violence

published April 17th, 2007

Virginia and the nation are grieving for the senseless loss of life on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. At this time, the Grand Rapids Community Foundation is aware of three funds that have been created at community foundations in Virginia to support the philanthropic response.

  • Foundation for the New River Valley in Blacksburg www.cfnrv.org has set up the 4-16-07 Fund and is in the process of convening nonprofit organizations in the area, knowing that the real job is on the long-term impact on the community.

  • An anonymous donor to The Foundation for the Roanoke Valley www.foundationforroanokevalley.org has set up the School Violence Assistance Fund.

  • In Richmond www.tcfrichmond.org, a corporate donor has initiated the VT Remembrance Fund for Student Safety to provide support for the Virginia Tech community in the near term and will support efforts to make Virginia's campuses safer in the longer term.
