Foundation grants worth $130,000 help promote access and support vocal music

The Board of Trustees of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation recently approved the following grants: Disability Advocates of Kent County, was given a grant of $100,000 to launch ZeroStep, which will create a comprehensive resource center to help families modify existing, or build new homes with an eye toward accommodating current or future accessibility needs. The program will provide detailed information regarding the inclusion of Universal Design (barrier free design) in hew home construction while offering a wide-range of resources for people who are modifying their current homes. “ZeroStep stands out as the most comprehensive program of its kind and will help make older and new homes in Kent County more accessible for people who are facing either a temporary or permanent disability,” said Marcia Rapp, vice president of programs for the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. ZeroStep is supported with funds from the Estate of Curtis M. Wylie and the Lucy E. Barnett Trust for the Elderly. Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp was given $30,000 to help build a 3,200 square foot facility to accommodate the camp’s choral program. The choral program was formerly situated in the camp’s open-air chapel which in recent years has housed over 120 singers; far exceeding its 50 student capacity. New facility features will include rehearsal space for 150 members or more, climate control for student safety and health, improved accessibility for campers with disabilities and suitable equipment to facilitate increased participation in the camp’s choral program. Funds for the grant are from the Mary I. David D. and Hunting Family Fund.
