May is Leave a Legacy Month

Governor Rick Snyder proclaimed May 2011 as Leave A Legacy Month in the State of Michigan. “Leave A Legacy” is a public awareness campaign that encourages citizens to make a charitable contribution to make a difference in the lives of future Michiganders.

As the Foundation charged with managing our community’s permanent endowment, Grand Rapids Community Foundation knows a thing or two about legacy.  We’d like to thank some of our donors who have already made their mark on our grand community:

Donald J. DeYoung

15 years ago, friends and family of Donald J. DeYoung helped establish a scholarship fund to honor Donald’s work with young people in the court system. Scholarships are awarded to former Kent County wards of the court who pursue education after high school.

Gifts: $210,176     Growth: $65,337     Scholarships: $39,816

Kathryn and Dennis Sullivan

Through their estate, the Sullivans established a unique fund with the Community Foundation.  50 percent of their Fund is restricted for their favorite charities including The Salvation Army; St. Bernard’s Parish in Irons; St. John’s Home and St. Stephen’s Parish in Grand Rapids.  The remaining 50 percent is a field of interest fund to support charitable and educational programs of religious organizations.

Gifts: $419,263     Growth: $743,062     Grants: $431,416
