Together, we will recover. Our community's response has inspired us. Your collaboration, innovation, advocacy and generosity give us strength.

Communities around the world are facing severe challenges in light of COVID-19. Each unique, but all unexpected and urgent. At Grand Rapids Community Foundation, we know the impact on our region will be long-term, especially for those who were already navigating racial, social and economic inequities prior to the crisis.

#GivingTuesdayNow is a global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Organizers of the movement say, “we believe that generosity has the power to unite and heal communities in good times and bad.” There are a number of ways you can get involved to meet West Michigan’s most pressing needs. Every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give.

1. Support near and long-term recovery

This moment calls us to ensure the extended response and recovery reach everyone in our community. The Kent County COVID-19 Recovery Fund, a fund of Grand Rapids Community Foundation, was established to respond to the near and long-term impact the COVID-19 pandemic will have on the most marginalized in our community, especially communities of color.

Consider a donation to the fund, which will support the recovery of nonprofits and small businesses serving those disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Because the fund is non-endowed, donations will be used to rapidly respond to the evolving crisis and long-term plans for recovery.

2. Thank Others

Writing cards of encouragement, clapping for healthcare workers and thanking essential workers have been popular ways to show our connection and support those who are helping our community. The City of Grand Rapids has organized virtual events and social media challenges, and the Facebook group Be the Bridge is a community-wide place to share good news.

3. Share Info About Your Favorite Causes

Inspire others to give together even when we’re apart. One of the easiest ways to amplify your impact is to tell your friends and family about causes close to your heart. Make sure your people know the why behind your giving - they might be inspired to follow suit!

Join us on social media by using #WhyIGive and #GRGives. To connect to the global response, use the hashtag #GivingTuesdayNow on social media.  Click here to visit us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn

4. Make a Facebook Fundraiser

Spread your love for a nonprofit through a Facebook fundraiser. These fundraisers are no cost to you and are simple to set up via your Facebook page. The funds go to the nonprofit itself, and it is easy for your friends and family to donate with a few clicks on their phone. You can let your community know what causes matter most to you and thank those that share your heart for philanthropy.

5. Support Small Businesses

Shift your spending to support small businesses whenever possible. Many businesses are offering gift cards or branded merchandise in addition to usual product offerings. Rescheduling appointments for a later date, instead of cancelling, is another way to show your support for local businesses.
