Making a Difference Through Year-End Giving

Throughout Kent County, individuals and families are demonstrating their generosity through giving. Generations of partners have built Grand Rapids Community Foundation and prepared us to meet current demands–those resources are being activated across our county and impacting countless lives. Similarly, the giving that happens today will make a difference for generations to come.

Donor partners can contribute to our collective impact through a wide range of giving solutions – from one-time gifts to establishing funds, there are options for a variety of giving styles and preferences. Two options to consider which may improve your year-end tax situation are Gifts from an IRA or establishing a Donor Advised fund:

  • Gifts from an IRA
If you have assets in your IRA and are 70 ½ or older, you can give up to $100,000 from your IRA to a nonprofit and exclude the distribution from your taxable gross income. This is known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution or an “IRA Rollover.” Read more about giving through a qualified charitable distribution from an IRA. Alternatively, if you have inherited an IRA from a loved one, contact a professional advisor or member of the Community Foundation team to discuss the benefits of gifting inherited IRA assets.
  • Donor Advised Funds
Establishing a Donor Advised fund with cash or appreciated securities continues to be a popular and efficient charitable strategy. What sets a Community Foundation Donor Advised fund apart from other providers is a dedicated philanthropic services team that provides personalized service and offers local knowledge and a uniquely informed perspective.

We have seen our community use a combination of these strategies, including using highly appreciated securities to group their donations by establishing a Donor Advised fund.
